El Pantio - 8th February “B”
Division
The “B” Division seems to be blighted
by bad luck when the series of matches are played
at El Plantio, the last time the played host the
the “B” Division in December the matches
were called off because of lightning, this time
it was a little more gentle and only frost yes
that what I said “frost” delayed the
start for thirty minutes while the temperature
rose to allow the greens to be playable.
There were some issues at stake with San Miguel
wanting to continue their upward trend against
bottom of the table Wolfpack, but everything
in golf does not go to plan, unless you’re
Tiger Woods. And sure enough they didn’t
all they could manage was a 2 – 2 draw
but did take the bonus points thanks to the
good scoring of Marg Birtwistle and Joe Dean
who amassed 66 points.
Obviously Wolfpack high scorer Ray Clayton
had not read the script and came in with the
highest score of the day 39 points.
Club 25 wanted to strengthen their hold onto
top spot, but were up against a solid La Manga
side, and 25’s advantage over second place
Elite was as mere two points. La Manga proved
their point by holding the leaders to a 2-2
draw in a high scoring game, there were nine
players scoring over 30 points, but Club 25
took the three bonus points.
After Torrevieja’s last outing it could
have been expected for them to flex their muscles,
but against an Elite side that have seven single
handicappers it was always going to be a tall
order, they came in highest point scorers and
somewhat overwhelmed Torrevieja by 33 points
and this win took them to the top of the table
by one point.
The penultimate teams at the lower end of the
table were looking to make some space between
themselves and the bottom team, but a draw seemed
the most likely result and so it was but by
better total points, but only 8, they took the
bonus points, which only meant that the gap
was narrowed to six points.
The results of the matches:
San Miguel G S 2 (245 points) vs Wolfpack G
S 2 (219 points)
Club 25 G S 2 (246 points) vs La Manga South
G S 2 (232 points)
Elite G S 3 (249 points) vs Torrevieja G S 1
(216 points)
Las Ramblas G S 2 (210 points) vs TOFFS G S
2 (218 points)
The best individual scores of the day went
to:
Ray Clayton (Wolfpack G S) 39 points, Garry
Merritt (San Miguel G S), Tony Whyatt (Las Ramblas
G S) 37 points, Adrian Hubert (Elite G S) Steve
Moore (Elite G S), 36 points, Brian Bevan (Elite
G S), Julie Patterson (La Manga South G S) 35
points.
The teams scoring the three bonus points were:
Club 25 G S, San Miguel G S, Elite G S and
TOFFS G S.
Handicap changes, downwards that is, are to
Ray Clayton from 22.7 to 21.5 – Gary Merritt
12.7 to 12.4, Tony Whyatt 18.3 to 17.9
There is a new name at the top of the table
Elite Golf Society by just one point, with just
two leagues games to play plus the re-arranged
one as a result of the lightening means a lot
can happen.
The fixtures can make it even more interesting
in March Elite G.S. takes on third place San
Miguel while interesting moves could take place
with La Manga versus TOFFS and Wolfpack have
to bite back against Club 25.
In April more fireworks could determine the
champions when Elite battle it out against Club
25 and third place who are currently just four
points of the pace. It could go anyway and the
re-arranged matches may just be the clincher.
Who said golf was not exciting? This Division
will go right down to the wire and the fat lady
is still belting out the arias.
Next matches are at Roda Golf on the Costa
Calida Friday 14th March first and tenth tee
start at 10:00
