Vega
Baja Premier Golf League - A Division Reports
Benijofar Golf Society – Vega Baja
‘A’ League at El Plantio, 1st February
2008
First things first and our best wishes go to John
Kemp, our Society Secretary, who is currently
undertaking radiotherapy treatment on a daily
basis.
Get well soon.
Well we have now passed the halfway stage of the
season and the league has begun to take shape.
Unlike last season when we ran away with the league
title at an early stage, this season is much different
with only a handful of points separating the teams
in the top half of the division.
Our own season has been extremely disappointing
stuttering along from game to game due to absence,
illness and loss of form of key players.
Despite our best attempts to throw away the title
of ‘A’ division champions we somehow
find ourselves in second place in the league a
mere 6 points behind the leaders La Manga to whom
we lost heavily earlier in the season.
We certainly need to put our early season troubles
behind us and have a strong close to the season
but the golfing gods have put us to the sword
again.
Why?
Our opponents for today’s game were third
placed Katie Reilly’s who were runners up
last season and winners of the inter society challenge.
Just how did we fair?
There is a saying that that when opportunity meets
preparedness that is luck, well we must have been
lucky today.
Having selected the best team available to us
on the today and checking the usual batting order
of our opponents we matched them head to head
with the pairings we believed could win us the
vital points.
First off for us today was the strong pairing
of Dave Mason and Stuart Tosh who finally managed
to shake off their opponents to win by 5 points
with a 61-point team score.
Playing second for us today was the new pairing
of Jon Peers and Graeme Card who were just too
good for their opponents on the day winning by
11 points and with a team score of 68 points.
Third away for us today was Mike Probert and his
old golfing partner from the UK, Barry Grinsell
who have consistently scored 60 points + in previous
games but who were not quite at the races today
and lost by 5 points with a team score of only
52 points despite being ahead until the 16th hole.
The last match was the new pairing of Peter Noble
and Phil Pettican who were always ahead through
the round and we were confident of the win as
we watched them play the final hole.
Their opponents both missed putts from inside
3 feet and as Phil tapped in from 2 feet he gave
a little ‘Tiger’ fist pump.
It was only then that we realised that it was
that putt which game them a 1 point win with a
team score of 64 points.
So the match finished in a 3-1 win for the Benijofar
Golf Society and with the bonus points secured
this was an excellent 12-3 result for our team.
We look forward to the next game at Roda Golf
on 7th March against Las Ramblas.
