Vega
Baja Premier Golf League - A Division Reports
Benijofar Golf Society – Vega Baja
‘A’ League at El Plantio, 5th October
2007
Well here we are again at the start of a new Vega Baja Premier Golf League season
only this time we are the defending champions and we are in every ones sights. We
are desperate to avoid the fate of the last two champions who were relegated
the following season.
During the summer months for various reasons we
have lost the services of a number of established
members and we have introduced a number of new
members to this ‘cauldron of competition’.
Add to this the fact that in my new role of Handicap Secretary I have brandished
the ‘cutting knife’ and many of the current squad have seen their
handicaps reduced over the summer months.
We therefore had much to be apprehensive about but armed with some new players
a number of new pairings and wearing team shirts presented by a new sponsor
in the form of N.G.S Servicios S.L. we headed off for the seasons opener at
El Plantio.
The golfing gods had not finished with us just yet as our first game opponents
were San Javier who only just missed out on the runners up spot last season.
Just how did we get on!
First off for us today was the new pairing of Jon Peers and Lee Fowler who were
down all the way until the final two holes before overcoming their opponents
by the score of 69 points to 68 points.
Congratulations to their opponents who would have beaten almost any other pairing
on the day.
Playing second for us today was the tried, tested and potentially volatile pairing
of John Kemp and Graeme Card who both scored consistently in winning by 10 points
with a score of 69 points.
Third away for us today was Mike Probert and his old golfing partner from the
UK, Barry Grinsell who ground down their opponents with steady golf while they
had difficulty in getting to terms with the course and eventually ran out winners
by a 17 point margin with a team score of 65 points.
As usual bringing up the rear for us was the pairing of Dave Mason and Phil
Pettican who came from 7 points behind at one stage to win by 10 points with
a team score of 68 points.
So the match finished in a 4-0 win for the Benijofar Golf Society and with the
bonus points secured this was an excellent 15-point start to the season.
We look forward to the next game at Roda Golf on 2nd November against La Manga
(North)
