Vega Baja Premier Golf League - A Division Reports

El Plantio Golf Club - 1st February 2008

It was a return to El Plantio for the start of the second half of the season with the top teams having everything to play for only three points separate first and second places and with three other teams La Siesta, Katie Reilly and La Zenia ready to pounce should either on slip up, it looks likely to be an exciting run in, with just three matches to play but all worth a maximum of 15 points each. These series of games are the first of the three.

The top match was Katie Reilly Golf Society against current champions Benijofar Golf Society and it looked that the good money could be on either of them.

It was in a relatively high scoring game with a total of 478 points being scored, it is often bandied about by the League players that it needed around 29 to 31 points to make sure you would be in the frame to win, well Benijofar edged the averages at 30.6 to Katie Reilly’s 29.13. Top scorer for Benijofar was Peter Noble with 38 points.

The score went 3 – 1 to Benijofar and with it the bonus points.

Las Ramblas “A” who at the other end of the table from leaders La Manga North, needed to do something special on the parkland course of El Plantio, a track that is totally different to the subtleties of their “Home” course, which on paper should have gone in their favour, but alas it didn’t and they went down 1 – 3 allowing La Manga to maintain their, narrow three point lead. All it need from Las Ramblas was those few points when you consider that in the individual pairing there were only 5 or even 2 points difference, there was a good Captain’s performance by Lindsay Forbes with a Par 36 points. But as the saying goes “You know what points mean?”

Following the 4 nil thumping La Siesta got last time out I guess they were thinking they might do the same to bottom side Lunes Golf Society, they came close only missing out by a solitary two points in the last match, losing by one point, it moved them up to third place nine points behind the leaders, how that whitewash cost them!

Middle of the table sides La Zenia and San Javier went head to head with either side needing to do something just that bit special in an effort to strengthen a position in the top half, but a draw was the what they got and La Zenia scoring fourteen more points to take the three bonus points and holding onto 4th place with an outside chance of causing some kind of upset.

The results of the matches:

Katie Reilly G S 1 (233 points) vs Benijofar G S 3 (245 points)
Las Ramblas G S 1 (224 points) vs La Manga North G S 3 (234 points)
Lunes G S 1 (219 points) vs La Siesta G S 3 (242 points)
La Zenia G S 2 (240 points) vs San Javier G S 2 (226 points)

The best individual scores of the day went to:

Peter Noble (Benijofar G S) 38 points, Lindsay Forbes (Las Ramblas G S, Jon Peers, (Benijofar G S) 36 points, George Rawlings (La Siesta G S) Stewart Harris (La Manga North G S) 35 points, and Fred Bennett (late reserve La Siesta G S) 34 points.

Bonus points went to:

Benijofar G S, La Manga North G S, La Siesta G S, La Zenia G S

So its now to the final run in and the maximum of 15 points available there has to be some soul searching either to consolidate positions or to maintain senior (not age) League status.

Leaders La Manga take on San Javier and will want to try and consolidate their lead while Benijofar have Las Ramblas who are smarting at the lowly position and just may surprise the second placed side, but the most interesting match at the De Vere Roda Resort on the 7th March must be the La Zenia versus La Siesta who hold fourth and third place respectively, each will want to put indifferent or disastrous result behind them in these penultimate games.

After all there are only three points separating them and only twelve points blanket the top four.

But the drop looks pretty ominous for Lunes Golf Society who take on Katie Reilly who have shown their strength from time to time over the season.

But the League and golf still can show strange quirks, so watch this space.
