Vega Baja Premier Golf League - A Division Reports

Benijofar Golf Society – Vega Baja ‘A’ League at Alicante Golf, 4th April 2008

There is only one way in which I can open this report………WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!

What a season it has been!

Upon reflection I just don’t know how we managed to win the Vega Baja ‘A’ division for the second year running.

We have experienced significantly reduced handicaps; loss of experienced team members, loss of form, illness and absence and STILL managed to beat the ’curse’ of the defending champions.

Congratulations to our opponents, particularly La Manga who put up one hell of a fight but had to settle for second place ahead of La Zenia and Katie Reilly.

The golfing gods decided the fate of the title would be settled on this day with the top four teams being pitched against each other with Katie Reilly and La Manga in direct competition and our match against the excellent La Zenia team.

So to the results.

First off for us today was the pairing of Lee Fowler and Alan Gifford who were having their second outing of the season and the competitiveness of the league came to the fore with a number of disputed rules query’s and they lost out in a hard fought match by only one point with a team score of 61 points.

Playing second for us today was the established pairing of Mike Probert and Barry Grinsell who ‘muscled’ their way to a team score of 68 points and a 7 point win with the scribe scoring 38 points for the second fixture running.

Third away for us today was the re-established pairing of Dave Mason and Phil Pettican who really had their hands full before winning by 4 points with a 64 point team total.

The last match away for us today was the pairing of Stuart Tosh and Graeme Card who had things much their own way winning by 18 points with a 65-point team total.

The final result was a 12-3 points victory, which matched that of second placed La Manga over Katie Reilly and gave us a 76- point season total and victory by 3 points.

We accumulated 1775 points throughout the season at an average of 31.7 points per players, which is very similar to the average from last season where we won the league with one match to play.

We look forward to next season and the introduction of the winners and runners up from the ‘B’ division into this ‘cauldron’ of competition.
